Post-exams: reflections and plans

So, significantly later than my last post (haven't achieved regularity in these yet), I find myself with an ocean of free time stretching out in front of me. My exams finished yesterday; they went reasonably well, but I am still nervous about the results I'll get from one or two papers! Time will tell.

On a more positive note, I've now got time to do all the things I wanted to before; I'm joining a new orchestra, going for long walks in University Parks (something I love to do, but never had the time for before), going to talks and thinking about things that interest me (hopefully this will translate into blogging at some point).

Also, I got a Wellcome Trust scholarship for this summer! I'll be working on a Computational Genetics project up at the Churchill Hospital, which hopefully I'll enjoy. It's going to be a bit hard to fit around everything else I've got going for the summer, but it's all about time management. Or so I tell myself... In reference to that project I've got coming up, I've been learning a bit of Python, as on my internship I'll be using pysam, a Python module which I think is specialised for working with SAM files that contain large amounts of genomic data. The project actually involves creating a hidden Markov chain model that should help to identify genes in an outbred mouse population - which sounds terrifying, but I'm sure I'll understand a bit more about what I'm doing once I've spent some time working there. :P Hoping that this internship will result in me actually being able to competently work on large programs, especially in imperative languages, which I am not used to, having learnt Haskell before any other languages.

Anyway, I'll post again soon, hopefully with some opinion pieces!
